Unclog a toilet

Signs Of A Clogged Toilet

The first step to unclog a toilet is to notice the signs that it is starting to clog.  The most common sign includes water filling up to the top of the toilet before draining.

If you notice this happening, the first thing you will want to use is a plunger.  A plunger should be able to unclog any blockage that has not had a chance to build up and cause other issues.

If the problem persists, you can try using a product like Drano to help break down the clog and resolve the problem.

DIY Solution

Additionally, you can make a DIY Drano solution with 1 cup of baking soda, 1 gallon of boiling water and 2 cups of vinegar.  Dump the baking soda into your toilet and let it sink to the bottom.  Once it has sunk to the bottom add a gallon of boiling water to activate the baking soda and add 2 cups of vinegar to avoid the baking soda from fizzing over the top of the toilet.

Let it sit for a couple of hours to see if the standing water has drained.  If it has not drained, let it sit overnight and then use a plunger before flushing.

Still Having Problems?

If the steps above have not worked, you likely have bigger issues than a clogged toilet.  At this point you will want to use a snake to see if you can reach to clog and clear it.
